The finished result depends on more than the paint itself. Proper preparation, the right tools, and careful application are the details behind a professional finish.

Not every surface should be painted the same way.
The thickness of the fibers on a roller cover is called the nap. We select the nap based on the surface, coating and finish we’re working with.
A 3/8 inch nap is commonly used on smoother walls and ceilings, 1/2 inch nap can work well on lightly textured surfaces, and 3/4 inch nap reaches further into heavier textures and rougher surfaces.
Choosing the appropriate roller cover helps the paint reach the surface properly and produce consistent coverage.

Application matters just as much as selecting the right tools.
Existing finishes also matter. Age, fading, sheen, lighting, surface condition and how the original coating was applied can all affect how the finished color appears.
Too much paint or improper application can create runs or sags, where the coating moves downward before it sets. And when an area doesn’t receive complete coverage, painters sometimes call the missed spot a “holiday.”
Paint manufacturers specify recommended coverage rates and film thickness for their coatings. On projects where coating thickness is specified, wet-film or dry-film thickness can be checked against the coating manufacturer’s requirements. Too little material can affect hiding, durability and performance; excessive application can contribute to runs, sags, improper curing and other defects.
The goal is consistent coverage and the appropriate film thickness for the coating being used.
A professional paint job is more than the finish coat. The work begins with protecting the property and preparing the surface, continues with the appropriate application method, and ends with cleanup and a final walkthrough with the customer.
